Artist Statement
“Photography has always been something I have been incredibly passionate about.
I moved to Mudgee in 2019 with my family, where we fell in love with a slower paced lifestyle in the heart of the rural countryside.
We enjoy bushwalking in the many beautiful environments in the Mudgee region. It’s here that I am often inspired by the diverse range of fauna & flora around me.
I completed my Certificate IV in Photography in 2021, as a way to dedicate myself further to this passion.
Photographers such as Olive Cotton, Lee Miller, Ansel Adams, Edward Western, Margaret Bourke White, among many others, have inspired my work over the years.
I am also fascinated by the way light impacts how we perceive an image - something that informs many of my projects and photographic techniques.”
An obsession with dandelions
“Around 2021, I developed a love of (some might say an obsession with!) dandelions. Over the past few years, my work has evolved into something I am truly proud of: the Tiny Dancers series.
Every time I photographed dandelions, all I could see were tiny ballerinas on a stage, their movement capturing my imagination.
Tiny Dancers is a series that represents resilience, strength, determination & the ability to overcome adversity. It symbolises hope, growth, healing & the ability to manifest our own desires.
Sometimes named after the seven movements of ballet: plier (to bend), étendre (to stretch), relever (to rise), glisser (to glide), sauter (to jump), élancer (to dart) & tourner (to turn).
I have been working on this series for the last couple of years, using dandelion seeds to create images that have an evocative & ethereal feel, conveying a sense of movement & grace.
I was very intentional in my use of low light, or painting with light, & long exposure to highlight & create depth, contrast & the ability to engage with the emotions these images evoke.”
